Pet insurance – do you need it?
If you are the type of person who would spare no expense in getting your sick dog or cat the treatment he/she needs, then pet insurance may be for you.

But what should you look for? And how much will it cost? The answers vary.

It’s important to shop around for an appropriate policy. There are many differences in deductibles, co-pays and caps, so be sure to scrutinize each policy to get a clear understanding of your benefits before committing to one plan. The cheapest policy is not necessarily the way to go, as it may exclude many treatments or cap expenses at a much lower level than you expected. In addition, note that pre-existing problems or hereditary conditions, such as hip dysplasia in certain breeds, may be excluded by most insurers - no matter what the cost. Annual premiums can range, on average, from $100 to $500, depending on the age of your pet and the type of coverage you want. Although the cost for some may seem high, if you want peace of mind (especially if recommended procedures exceed your means) then pet insurance may be a good option.
